Le Rossignole et l'Empereur 2ème partie

          Les désirs de l’empereur sont des ordres à éxaucer.

"Tsing-pe!", dit le chancelier, qui s'empressa de parcourir de nouveau tous les escaliers de haut en bas et d'arpenter encore les salles et les couloirs. La moitié des gens de la cour alla avec lui, car l'idée de se faire piétiner le corps ne leurs plaisaient guère. Ils s'enquirent du remarquable rossignol qui était connu du monde entier, mais inconnu à la cour.   

          Finalement, ils rencontrèrent une pauvre fillette aux cuisines. Elle dit: "Mon Dieu, Rossignol? Oui, je le connais. Il chante si bien! Chaque soir, j'ai la permission d'apporter à ma pauvre mère malade quelques restes de table; elle habite en bas, sur la rive. Et lorsque j'en reviens, fatiguée, et que je me repose dans la forêt, j'entends Rossignol chanter. Les larmes me montent aux yeux; c'est comme si ma mère m'embrassait!"

"Petite cuisinière, dit le chancelier, je te procurerai un poste permanent aux cuisines et t'autoriserai à t'occuper des repas de l'empereur, si tu nous conduis auprès de Rossignol; il doit chanter ce soir."

         Alors, ils partirent dans la forêt, là où Rossignol avait l'habitude de chanter; la moitié des gens de la cour suivit. Tandis qu'ils allaient bon train, une vache se mit à meugler.

"Oh!", dit un hobereau. "Maintenant, nous l'avons trouvé; il y a là une remarquable vigueur pour un si petit animal! Je l'ai sûrement déjà entendu!"

"Non, dit la petite cuisinière, ce sont des vaches qui meuglent. Nous sommes encore loin de l'endroit où il chante." 

Puis, les grenouilles croassèrent dans les marais. "Merveilleux!", s'exclama le prévôt du château. "Là, je l'entends; cela ressemble justement à de petites cloches de temples."

"Non, ce sont des grenouilles!", dit la petite cuisinière. "Mais je pense que bientôt nous allons l'entendre!" À ce moment, Rossignol se mit à chanter. 

"C'est lui, dit la petite fille. Écoutez! Écoutez! Il est là!" Elle montra un petit oiseau gris qui se tenait en haut dans les branches.

"Est-ce possible?", dit le chancelier. "Je ne l'aurais jamais imaginé avec une apparence aussi simple. Il aura sûrement perdu ses couleurs à force de se faire regarder par tant de gens!"

"Petit Rossignol, cria la petite cuisinière, notre gracieux Empereur aimerait que tu chantes devant lui!"

"Avec le plus grand plaisir", répondit Rossignol. Il chanta et ce fut un vrai bonheur. "C'est tout à fait comme des clochettes de verre!", dit le chancelier. "Et voyez comme sa petite gorge travaille fort! C'est étonnant que nous ne l'ayons pas aperçu avant; il fera grande impression à la cour!" "Dois-je chanter encore pour l'Empereur?", demanda Rossignol, croyant que l'empereur était aussi présent.

"Mon excellent petit Rossignol, dit le chancelier, j'ai le grand plaisir de vous inviter à une fête ce soir au palais, où vous charmerez sa Gracieuse Majesté Impériale de votre merveilleux chant!"

"Mon chant s'entend mieux dans la nature!", dit Rossignol, mais il les accompagna volontiers,    sachant que c'était le souhait de l'empereur.
